Monday is a four person mixed team event with only the best two stableford scores to count on each hole. As you might expect there were some excellent scores returned and two teams both hit 89 points. It was the team of Tracey Taylor, Carl Rulton, Clare Mills and Paul Bell that emerged as the winners with a better countback score over second placed Ginny Richardson, Barbara Thorpe, Caroline Gard and Sarah Fryer. Third team home with 87 points was Paul Lewis, Peter Dabbs, Simon Parkes and Michael Gent.
Tuesday is a three person mixed team event with a combination of stableford scoring – one to count on the first six holes, two on the next six and all three on the final six. The mixed team of Malcolm Boucher, Caroline Gard and Peter Gard scored a commendable 88 points that was two points clear of the second and third teams who both had 86 points. They were separated on countback leaving Gary Cattermole, Keith Cattermole and John Coupland in second place ahead of David Baker, David Tilling and Paddy Fennelly. As is tradition on Tuesday there were also teams representing the greenkeepers and the best of these with a score of 73 points, suggesting they are better at maintaining the golf course than playing it, was Stephen Vaughan, Craig Serafin and Mark Twitchett.
Wednesday saw a field of 90 golfers taking part in the mixed fourball better ball event that has for many years been sponsored by Ellisons. Scoring was very high with 16 pairs achieving 40 points or more. First place was secured by Tony and Gareth Nicholas with a score of 44. Just one point back was the pairing of Nigel Jackson and Simon Martin-Redman with 43. In third place was John Sowton and Alan Morrison with 42 points.
Thursday is the ever popular Ladies Invitation Day when men can only take part if they are invited by a lady member. The format is a mixed foursomes stableford event. The result was a triumph for two past captains, Ginny Richardson playing alongside James Hide who scored an impressive 41 points; but they needed the intervention of countback to separate them from the second placed team of Donna and Toby Oliver. Third place went to the pairing of Karen Wright playing with Steve Mitchell who scored 39 points.
Friday is always the busiest day because the Texas Scramble event has a shotgun start in the morning and another in the afternoon; both tee times had a full complement of teams taking part. Ultimately the weather played its part and the morning golfers were met with strong winds that conveniently subsided for the afternoon golfers. Nevertheless everyone taking part enjoyed the event and the winning team of Adrian Joshua, John Oakford, playing with Cameron and Marius Wolmarans managed to complete the course with an impressive net score of 51. In close pursuit of the winning team was the all ladies team of Gina Donnelly, Rita Turner, Maria Naden and Helen Barr who had a net score of 53. Third place was decided on countback with Barry Povoas, Gary Bishop, Paul Streete and Adam Miles securing the position with a net score of 54.
Members of the Kirby Course also played in three events during Golf Week. On Monday the stableford event was won in handsome style by Karen Royer with 45 points. Further back in second place was Dave Woods with 35 points just ahead of third placed Keith Pryke with 34 points.
On Tuesday the Greensomes event was won by Ian Johnson and Matt Holmes ahead of Carol Pryke and Jim Clark with Terence Dalton and Debbie Ellis third.
Friday was a Texas Texas Scramble for teams of three. The winning trio was Clive Andrews, Mike Buitekant and Kirk Griffin who finished ahead of second placed Ian Jones, Debbie Ellis and Jim Clark.
It was worth noting that there were a number of somewhat outrageous golfing outfits on show throughout the week both on the golf course and in the clubhouse but that just added to the fun element of Golf Week which is mostly about taking part. Normal rules regarding dress codes will be resumed next week!
