against Dullatur GC at Douglas Park.
The Competition Format: A Knock-out competition through the week. Two pairings Play each evening. They play to a finish - the 18th, recording a holes up or down result. The match is decided on the cumulative total of the two matches.
Our team: Clark Nelson & Daniel Forbes (C&D) and Angus Watson & Greg Telfer (A&G). We were defending the Trophy, won last year at Sandyhills GC. This year we were just down the road at Douglas Park GC - a well-kent course for Clark and Angus.
This week the boys were tested not only by their opponents but also the elements.
The weather on Wednesday was awful - heavy squally showers and even worse on Thursday, one on-course WhatsApp described the conditions as ‘Brutal’. Testimony to the guys resolve, let alone golfing ability in these conditions.
• Tuesday v Palacrigg GC - both pairings in good form and a good win
• Wednesday v Bearsden GC - fight all the way, took control in later stages - 4up win
• Thursday v Lenzie GC - always a battle with Lenzie. Never more than a couple of holes in it - however never down - we squeezed out a win (Half & 3up)
The Final v DULLATUR GC
The sun shone on the finalists, which at least encouraged spectators out to enjoy all the joys, frustration and skills that foursomes golf bring to the table.
• Dullatur’s young side took control early on but by the turn we had pulled it back (a/s A&G & 4up C&D).
• Cruising? - Foursomes ‘is a funny old game’ - C&D push the self-destruct button at 10th, 11th & 12th - 13th tee C&D 1up / A&G a/s thru 13th.
• The closing holes were decisive A&G winning the 15th, 16th & 17th to go 3up
• C&D won the 16th to go 2up enough to retain the trophy
Fabulous effort by the Team is unseasonal testing conditions.
Foursomes golf is a unique challenge in itself but when you add ‘brutal’ weather conditions into the mix it puts their win into perspective and has to be admired.
Testimony to the consistent high quality of golf played in these conditions through the week - justifying the saying “form is temporary, class is permanent”. Well done guys.
