That Was the Week that Was
Queen Mother’s Winner and more…
The Hogg Cup

Tuesday afternoon saw the Junior Club Championship, with sixteen 11-18 year olds competing for the Hogg Cup. Whilst this was reported in Paddy Griffith’s section of Fridays newsletter it didn’t give us the opportunity to include a selection of photos. So here goes

Club Champ, fifteen-year-old Ed McCaw, with 42 points

Best young golfer of the year, Axel Jones with 36 points.

Lowest scratch score was Izzy Yang with an 83.
Nearest the pin - Marco D'Arrigo
Longest Drive - George Lacy

Friday Roll-up

The Friday Roll-up was back, after a week break, and 28 players took part.

This week’s winner was Graham Valentine with 44 points, from Gary Burns with 42, then Graham Juber 3rd with 40. All three received severe handicap reductions.

As is normal on the last Friday of the month the roll-up group ware treated to cheese & biscuits at prize giving, courtesy of El Capitan.

August Medal

Clearly Graham Juber’s Friday roll-up podium finish had not taken too much out of him as he cantered home in Saturday’s medal with a stunning nett 61.

“Best round of my golfing life!” was Graham’s comment, on a round that included 10 pars. Many congratulations Graham.

Three shots behind on 64 was William Gardiner and another three back, in third was Philip Glynn. Not much need for counting back there then!

Best gross was a 73 from Ivan Darian-Smith with thirteen pars and two birdies.

Sunday Roll-up

The Sunday roll-up was a little later than normal due to the morning round of The Queen Mother’s Trophy. Clearly the late start suited Mike Williams as he cruised in with 41 points, 4 clear of Andrew Willson and Chas Bain.

Queen Mother’s Trophy

One of the most prestigious competitions in the club, the trophy was presented by the Queen Mother to mark the Centenary year of the club and the association of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth II to the club. Congratulations to all who had qualified to play by winning a Stableford or Medal.

Played today, over 36 holes, the leader after the first 18 was Elliot Lake on 74, from Ben Sampson on 76, then Rhys Jones on 77. 36 holes, however, is a huge test for golf and there was a switch in first and third at the conclusion.

Huge congratulations to Rhys Jones winning the trophy with 77+74 = 151

Ben Sampson was runner up with 76+79 = 155. (Seems content with that and has said something to amuse The Captain!)
Third place went to Elliot on 74+85 = 159

Hudson Trophy

Held at the South Herts Golf Club and played since 1959 the Hudson Trophy is contested by Club teams consisting of the Club Professional and three amateurs - it is played off scratch and is a foursome stroke-play over 36 holes

Still waiting the results on that one but big hand to Skip for getting up there for proceedings then back to greet the QM players finishing off!
