Howlett Smith v Caister
Gorleston retain Trophy after 13 years in the wilderness
Friday September 6th saw 10 Gorleston members pop over the river to play the 2nd leg of the Howlett Smith trophy. Defending a 7 hole lead from the home leg earlier in the summer the teams were sorted and paired with their opponents.

First out for Gorleston were Ray Pope and Fred Simeons who as a punishment for being the only pair to lose at Gorleston were paired with Caister's top dogs, Captain Blaire Ainslie and Simon Clark.

The writing must have been on the wall for the Caister guys as they started with 2 birdies and a par only to find themselves 1 down to Ray and Fred who were receiving a few shots against them, in the end Ray and Fred won 3up.

All the matches were reasonably close with no halved matches and with the final score on the day Gorleston 3up we ended 10up overall to win the coveted Howlett Smith Trophy.

All matches were played in fine spirit with plenty of Banter between each other and the day ended with a lovely 2 course meal followed by a cheese board and Port.

During Blaire's speech he did mention the fact we had an Honours board recording each club's victories and the fact most were GY&C up there and enquired as to where the trophy was only to be told it was already at the engravers having Gorleston's name put on it.

The ramblings after were ended with Gorleston Captain Howard Kellett presenting Blaire with a lovely new Broom to mark the fact it was a clean sweep for Gorleston.

A brilliant day was had by all and we're already looking forward to next year.
