Mens' Midweek Stableford - Arthur Charlesworth Cup
Last Wednesday, as part of the midweek stableford, was the Arthur Charlesworth Cup. The Arthur Charlesworth is awarded to the highest scoring Veteran in the September Stableford and was won by Jamie Terry, with 40 points
Congratulations Jamie - well played and a great 40 points
The stableford itself, was won by Andrew Jones, one point better on 41. Jamie was second with his 40 and Richard Arnfield came in third also on 40. Best gross went to our own very special beancounter, Member for Finance, Ally Dunn, with a card containing four birdies and coming in just three over on 73. Great round Ally.
Members’ Guest Day
After a chilly start, the weather was fabulous, the course magnificent, the food as always top draw and the day managed to perfection by the GM and Captain, who despite not playing was as attentive and gracious as always. (these are Graham Juber’s words, not the newsroom’s!)
This years winners were Mark Stocker and Ally Dunn with their guests Steve Downey and Andrew Osborne with 84 points, in the best two from four alliance format.
Second were Mike Gore, Paul Challiner, Sam Wells & Graham Stajkowski 82/40
Third - David Meldramm, Keith Tabley, Jonnie Meldram & William Doyle 82/38
Fourth - Gary Dawson, Max Dawson, Glenn D’Sa & Emile Charbine 80
David White Vases
Saturday saw the fourball comp for the David White Vases and our first implementation of the new 85% handicap allowance, to bring us in line with recommendations. What could possibly go wrong? Well if you were there you’ll know.
Anyway onto the results and congratulations to winners, Kai Stengel & Gary Toal with 45 points.
Runners up were Mark Nimmo & David Henderson, 44/23, and third Page Singletary & Alan Shingler 44/21.
Sunday Roll-up
Congratulations to Member for Social Activities, Gary Norman, taking the honours with a splendid 41 points. Good to see Gary back in a bit of form having a long term back injury to deal with. On top of that he now has a two shot cut to deal with!
Top Gun
This is the one we’ve been waiting for - our inaugural Top Gun shoot-out competition. You will all have seen the promo info so I won’t repeat here.
Shortly before 1pm yesterday the 19 qualifiers gathered to listen to a final brief from Pro and competition instigator, Nick Lloyd.
That was quick and simple - one stop for a group pic (supplied thanks to El Capitan who having despatched Messrs Stu McLarty and Steve Williams in his morning Cap n Pro was on hand all afternoon)…
…and it was on to the 1st where, I think, that’s Vice preparing to lead off proceedings. sometime later we had our first elimination. Must be a bit like being first out of Strictly so hardlines to Yvonne Bailey who has been in great form recently.
The competition was fierce and standard very high as shown by GM, John Maguire, and Craig Jones having to play a chip-off eliminator on twelve having both made their pars!
Last lady standing, Kirsty MacDonald, went out to the most unlucky shot on six when her tee shot, that was flying to the green, just caught the top of the right hand bunker, pugging just below the lip and making the out in one an impossibility.
Four left standing coming down 16 were Graham Juber, Gary Burns, Ian Banks and Philip Glynn. Another eliminator and the pressure got to Phil as Gary had gone very close and he duffed his chip to go out. A topped second into the fairway bunker cost Ian on 17 leaving Gary and Graham to battle out the 18th. A fine drive and second put Gary some 12ft from the pin whilst The Jube’s second found the greenside bunker.
A terrific bunker shot put Graham just inside Gary but after Gary had slid past the hole then putted out for his par Graham narrowly missed, making Gary Burns TRGC 2024 Top Gun.
Well played all and huge thanks to Nick Lloyd for bringing this concept from his Sydney Club and to Grahame Falconer for implementing.
…and finally
It was International Greenkeepers day a while back and our very own Super Keeper, Les Howkins, got his own special message from TV legend Basil Brush
Enjoy!
That’s All Folks…
