GAILES LINKS TROPHY FINAL
Liam McHugh v Clark Nelson
Liam was receiving 9 shots from Club Champion Clark Nelson.
To add insult to injury Liam rolled in a 20 footer at the first for birdie.
Nett birdies followed at the 3rd & 4th, then a two at the par three 6th, another nett birdie at the 7th - Liam was (5 UP). Clark went for the 8th - found the gorse (Liam 6 UP).

Finally a birdie for Clark at the 9th and his first win. Liam - out in Gross level par and 5UP.

A match of two halves. A strong breeze blew across or against on most of the back nine. Clark won the 10th and 12th with pars, 13th and 14th with birdies - Liam just 2UP. Both players birdie attempts at the 15th, unbelievably escaped dropping in.

A Dramatic Come Back? Liam’s last shot was at the 16th.

• Clark at the back of the green in 2.
• Liam in a gorse bush - drop out and on in 5 - he held his nerve and holed a 10 footer (6 net 5)
• Clark’s long down wind putt from the back of the green meandered 6ft past.
• In classic matchplay circumstances he missed the return - a Half - Liam had ‘stopped the Rott’ 2UP with two to play.

A sad end to a terrific match. In going for the green at the 17th, Clark’s ball found the heather and he conceded the match to Liam.

VC Cliff Barrowman and I were treated to a final of the highest quality of golf from both players.

Liam’s magnificent front nine was matched by Clark’s almost miracle comeback, that only a player of his quality is capable off.

Congratulations to Liam, a day that will be etched on his memory forever
