1. Thunder and lightning
Play is suspended when the thunder clap happens within 10 seconds of the lightning flash. Players are asked to mark the ball (in comp) and leave the course.
2. Fog
Play is suspended when the first fairway bunker is not visible from the pro shop steps. Players are permitted to remain on the course until play is re started.
3. High winds
Play is suspended when wind speed is above 40 mph the guidance for this is taken from the met office and bbc forecasts. Players are asked to mark the ball (in comp) and leave the course.
4. Snow and ice
Parts, or all of the course are closed when snow or ice patches affect safety and/or interfere with play.
After periods of frost over 5 to 7 days we may introduce temp Greens until the greens thaw.
5. Rainfall
Competitions can be suspended at anytime by the person running the competition if conditions are considered not of a suitable level.
Decisions to close, particularly close and levels of restriction are based on safety and ground conditions not a volume of rain as this number can change depending on other factors such as Daylight hours, ET, Wind, Area of the course, Time of year, Cumulative rainfall…
We use markers on the course to help guide this process.
Play is suspended when areas of 18th green begin to flood up.
When the size of the puddle on the 1st and 2nd fairway is a certain size.
Depressions on the course ie.3rd, 14th etc.
But most of the decisions are based on past experience and what we feel is safe and manageable for golf.
We know this provides a lot of controversy but we always take this decision seriously and take it with the best of intentions and is made by a Senior Greenkeeper (normally the course manager) or the professional if greenstaff are not on site.
