Captain's Blog
February 2025
It will soon be Valentine's Day! I'm sure many of our romantically inclined members will be looking forward to the opportunity to show their devotion to their partner in love. Or perhaps not....? In any case, we have a good evening planned for February 15 - I'm told there was even a marriage proposal last year! I think she accepted (hope so anyway). It would be good to see you there, especially as we've all had little chance to see people much recently because of the frequent course closures.

As south east England now seems to have a different winter climate from the ones I recall from last century, involving FAR TOO MUCH rain, we've had to make do with an only occasionally open course - and even when it's open it's a pretty tough prospect for the average golfer, despite the fabulous work done by Jamie and his team. I know this because I am - at best - an average golfer myself. This was made clear to me when I duly made my exit from the winter knockout at the hands of Lewis - aka 'Magic' - Wond (geddit? - it won't be the first time that nickname's been suggested). The extreme good luck which had seen me through the previous round deserted me, and Lewis won more comfortably than the 2 & 1 score suggests. I do, though, enjoy playing with - or even against - good golfers because some of the shots played are really impressive and worth seeing, even though they sometimes mean another lost hole for me........!

There have been some small changes in the organisation of some of the teams which represent our club. Shortly the lists will go up on the board and you'll have a chance to sign up for one or other (or more) of the teams so keep your eyes open. The one thing I, and the people helping me, would appreciate is that, if you find that you become unavailable after you've signed up, please remember to remove your name from the list so that we know where we are when selecting the teams. We'll be doing our best to give everyone a chance to play in these enjoyably competitive matches so make sure your name is on the list(s). If you have any questions about any of the teams or the competitions involved, please ask. There will be match managers happy to help with queries - you could even ask me if you like. A special mention should go to Andy Lamb (Seniors teams), Terry White (Sussex Handicap teams) & Andy Ross (Scratch Team) who have worked hard in this area on behalf of the club in recent years. They're all taking a well-earned rest for now.

Every season there are invitations from a few clubs to join in their men's invitation team competitions. So far this year we've had forms sent to us by Haywards Heath and Cooden Beach. The usual arrangement seems to be that a team of three senior men is hosted by a member of the home club and the four players together make up a team, rather like our own seniors team invitation in July. These are generally good days out - often with decent prizes - and we have plenty of senior gentlemen so if you would like to get a three man team together, let me know or have a word with Steve in the office, who clearly needs something to occupy him as he's responsible for the picture accompanying this BLOG!

The first full week of February looks a bit more promising on the weather front and quite a few of us are back on the course - might see you there....
