What is Custom Fitting?
Custom fitting is a personalized process that matches a golfer with the ideal golf clubs tailored to their unique swing characteristics, style, and preferences. During a custom fitting session, a trained fitter uses specialized equipment and software to analyze a golfer's swing, identifying key parameters such as swing speed, ball flight, and spin rates.
The fitter then uses this data to recommend specific clubhead and shaft combinations that optimize the golfer's performance. This may involve adjusting variables like loft, lie, shaft length, flex, and clubhead design to find the perfect match.
Last week, I had Garry Hawes in for a fitting for a new Ping driver. The final weapon of choice was the new Ping G440 Max driver! Here's a little bit about what we achieved from the fitting:
Garry's Fitting Results: Increased Launch Angle and Reduced Backspin
In Garry's case, the custom fitting session revealed that optimizing his driver settings could lead to significant gains. By increasing his launch angle and reducing backspin, Garry achieved more distance.
Increased Launch Angle: A higher launch angle means the ball is flying higher and longer, resulting in more carry distance. This is particularly beneficial for golfers who struggle with low-flying drives or those who play on courses with longer holes.
Reduced Backspin: Backspin is a type of spin that occurs when the ball rotates backward, creating drag and slowing it down. By reducing backspin, Garry's drives are now traveling farther, as less energy is being lost to spin.
These gains combined to give Garry a noticeable increase in distance, which is a game-changer for any golfer! Garry finished in 2nd place in Tuesday's seniors competition. It's great to see a new club provide instant improvements!
