Someone who came to us, looking for more distance off the tee, was Dale (pictured). He had a Ping G410 driver in the bag and thought it was time to upgrade.
With his old driver, we were seeing quite a low launch angle, as well as a large dispersion. After seeing this, we started with a slightly lighter and softer shaft, and a higher loft, in a G440 Max head. With this combination, we saw an increase in the launch, and Dale commented on how good the driver felt off the face. However, we didn't see much increase in distance.
Even though the launch was better, the spin appeared to be a little high. Therefore, we stuck with the same loft in the G440 Max head but switched to a stiffer shaft. Wow, what a difference! Dale's improved launch was maintained, but the spin had decreased. This resulted in a 20-yard increase from his old driver! By going into the stiffer shaft, compared to the first driver we tried, Dale's dispersion tightened up nicely as well.
With the increase in distance with the driver, we saw the option to get a new 3 wood in the bag as well. We matched up the shaft specs from the new driver, and gained a better launch with the 3 wood, making it more playable, especially when it's used to go for the green on some par 5s and long par 4s!
It's fittings like these that go to show how important getting custom fit is! If Dale had chosen to buy a new driver off the shelf, without getting a custom fit, he may have thought he needed a lighter and softer shaft to gain distance, but his fitting experience showed that this wouldn't have been the case!
