This beat the previous record of 68 played off the extended 62+ course, set by James last year in the Club Championships and equalled by Lewis White in the April Medal a few weeks ago.
This record is for the newly remodeled course which came into play in 2012, whilst the 65 which Robin Murray shot when playing off the 62 tees in April 2022 remains as the course record for that course.
However, Paul Newcombe’s 61 in July 2001, playing on the old course layout, still stands as a remarkable achievement and I’m sure James has that in his sights as a challenge for the future.
James’ round sets him up very well for the Devon Gold Medal later in the month where he will be one of the favourites to win the Devon Amateur Championship matchplay at Tiverton. It is also a great boost for the team playing in the first round of the Parker Trophy next week, where (if selected!) he will spearhead East Devon’s challenge to defend the county scratch trophy they won last year.
His net round of 64 also won him the Warn Cup, and helped lower his handicap to plus 2.4 and a return to being the lowest handicapped member of East Devon.
Congratulations James on a remarkable round of golf.
