Friday was a day of blue skies and bright sunshine and our day 1 Matchplay, with 6 games being fought over and 2 pts for a win, 1 pt for a half. 5 hours later, the scores were in and Team France went into a commanding 8-4 lead with wins for PeterF/Marky, Richard/Katy, Heather/Alison, Colin/Debbie and Peter/Winnie, Jim/Mick. Some games went to the 18th, some were concluded on the 16th, but all in all many close games were played out. Then, contrary to the first hole where most ECGC members failed to hit the par 3 green, everyone made a beeline for the bar where we debated the highs and the lows of the day - Martin Tuthill winning the nearest the pin for the men while strangely, the ladies failing to register an entry for the ladies nearest the pin on the 16th (rectified the following day with a Debbie Thorpe special across the water on the challenging 3rd).
As the evening wore on the ECGC representation in the bar dwindled, with most people ready to recharge ahead of the Day 2 Scramble. Saturday morning saw six 4-balls departing from hole 10, with 6 pts up for grabs for the winning team (descending down to 1). A slightly quicker 4.5 hours later, the scores were in, a whitewash for Team France, with Wingnut/Jean/Ed/Katy coming first, Marky/Richard/Colin/Debbie coming second and PeterF/Heather/Alison/Moose coming third - Team France winning 23-10 overall.
Prizes were handed out in the bar with a quick drink and a snack and with that we concluded our first away weekend. Thanks to everyone for making our first away weekend such a success - discussion is already underway for a return in 2026.
