Course Update June 2025
June 2025 Green Keepers Update
Dear Members,

June has been an exceptionally busy month on the course as we've entered full summer maintenance mode. The significant growth acceleration we experienced through May had continued into June, requiring intensive cutting operations across all areas of the course.

Course Maintenance Progress

The transition from spring to summer conditions has been successfully managed despite the demanding workload. All greens received comprehensive maintenance including verti-draining to 150mm depth, their first liquid fertiliser application of the season, and wetting agent treatments to ensure optimal playing surfaces through the summer months. You may have noticed seed heads appearing on the greens during June - this is normal seasonal growth. We've responded with verti-cutting operations to remove these seed heads while simultaneously lowering the height of the groomers on our cutting units. This dual approach has improved both the appearance and playability of the greens. While we would ideally verti-cut more frequently, our current staffing levels dictate the frequency of these operations.

Course Presentation

Our commitment to maintaining excellent playing conditions is evident in the detailed work completed this month. All bunkers have been strimmed and edged, while fairway distance markers have been trimmed and freshly painted. These finishing touches contribute significantly to the overall presentation of the course.

Member Cooperation Required

I've been approached numerous times this month regarding bunker maintenance etiquette. It's becoming increasingly common for golfers to leave bunkers unraked after play. I must emphasise that raking bunkers after use is fundamental golf course etiquette and essential for maintaining playing conditions for all members. Please ensure you rake any bunker you enter - this simple action makes a significant difference to the course's condition and other members' enjoyment.

Volunteer Support

Our dedicated volunteer team continues their invaluable work, focusing on repairing animal damage areas and divot-ing fairways and tees. Their contribution remains crucial to maintaining our high standards. If you can spare an hour or two on Monday mornings between 8:30 and 10:30, they would be delighted to welcome you to the team.

Looking Forward

The course finished June in excellent condition, with all areas now under regular cutting regimes. The benefits of our winter preparation work, detailed in February's update, are clearly visible as we maintain optimal playing conditions throughout the growing season.

Our goal remains unchanged: to make Wishaw Golf Club the finest course in Lanarkshire.

I hope you continue to enjoy your golf and that the favourable weather conditions persist.

Thanks,

Gerry Bradley
