168 players joined the fun with the first group teeing off at 7.30 in the morning. Neil is pictured congratulating Geoff Thomas from the winning team.
Neil welcomed golfers of all ages and abilities with the youngest being 14 and the oldest team having a combined age of 335 – a brilliant effort gentlemen. The event was played off the 59 tees which helped attract such a big field, including many seniors who said they wouldn’t have entered if the 62 tees had been used. However, this didn’t distract the top golfers with one team containing 3 of last year’s Parker Cup winning team, making it into the prizes despite only getting a combined 5 shots.
The tenth tee was a welcome break for the players with pasties and sausage rolls, snack bars and chocolate washed down by a wide selection of soft and alcoholic beverages. Neil’s wife, Andrea, was in attendance all day at the half way house and was gratefully supported by Charley Hall, Joy Wisdom and Janis Stafford at various times, so a huge thank you must go to Charley and the ladies for their hard work.
Dani and her team offered a subsidized Captain’s meal of cheeseburger, chips and a pint, which was taken up by many on completion of their round or before they started. Also, thanks to James for helping set up and clear up the tenth tee, and to Martin Wisdom for his early help to get the event going
Thanks need to go to Trevor and Ross who helped run the competition and check the scores for the Town Club teams manually, as they couldn’t be entered on V1. This meant that the scores published on ClubV1 didn’t include the team of Viv Edgecumbe, Neil Hardman, Simon Pearce & Mark Wagstaff who came in 4 th place.
Nearest the pin prizes were offered on all four par 3’s with the winners being David Fish (4 th ), David Lavelle (8 th ), Geoff Thomas (10 th ) and John Lythgoe (13 th ).
The winning team of Geoff Thomas, Jerry Daves, Mark Munro & Nick Moran teed off early and their score of 90 was never threatened, although one of the later groups of Richard Greetham, Mike Trapnell, Jerry Roberts & Sam Whalley came closest with 86. Third place on 84 points and countback were Jon Axon, Peter Phillips, John Neill & Dominic Humphreys, just pipping the Town Club team above, whilst the team with few shots of James Pickard, Tom Woodhouse, Duncan Taylor and David Hancock also had 84 points, but the dreaded countback saw them relegated to 5 th .
Overall, the day was a great success in beautiful conditions on a great, but fair, golf course, so thanks to Paul and his team for presenting it in such good condition in this dry summer.
