Since my last BLOG I have had a minor operation on one of my eyes, which has rendered my sight a little confused and confusing. Things are returning to what might be called normal now but for a week or two there has been a certain unpredictable nature to the business of focussing. It does of course give me an excuse for missed putts, having several pins to choose from, though I shall soon be back to having no excuse to use, merely incompetence. Cyclops golf is not really for me. Some of our members play with almost no sight at all in one of their eyes which is highly commendable in my view.
As I write, the day approaches for the "final" day of the Captain and Vice Captain challenge. This year quite a few pairs have got the better of Steve and me; we seem to have perfected the inability to play different holes well so rather than "ham and eggs", our hallmark as a pair seems to be ham and ham or even eggs and eggs - occasionally sausages and sausages on a bad day!). If you think that last remark was about breakfast, ask someone to explain to you the nuance of 4-ball better ball matchplay(!), although the final day of competition will - as tradition dictates - start with breakfast courtesy of the captain. I expect the standard to be very high indeed on the day, given the quality of the players who have qualified (and the quality of the breakfast too). Speaking of high quality food, the grub at the dinner dance was very good indeed - and the portions were sufficient to prevent me actually finishing my profiteroles (a rare occurrence). The band provided plenty of good music for us all to dance to as well. A jolly evening for everyone.
So, many thanks to all of you for helping to make my year such good fun. As already mentioned, the F & B staff have done a sterling job, with their brilliant, smiling service and the excellent fare on offer. The greens team too have provided a course that stands out among local courses and has garnered many a compliment from visiting golfers. My grandson is of the opinion that it's the best he's played (admittedly from a smallish selection but hey...). Trish and I have indeed been very fortunate to be captains when the club is in such good health (our membership is now full) and we've been blessed with a really warm, sunny summer which has allowed most of our planned golfing events to go ahead with little inconvenience.
Thanks again - and I hope to see you on the course or perhaps in the bar. Keep swinging and keep making the most of your membership of our marvellous club!
