Seniors Christmas Bash
Phil Juneau wins with 40 points
We have great camaraderie in this section of GGC and it couldn’t be better evidenced that at our “Christmas Bash”. This year a slightly smaller crowd of 69 enjoyed a superb 3 course festive meal (including 4 ladies who ran the half way hut and plied us with hot drinks with brandy, sausage rolls & mince pies, plus a superb raffle which resulted in a further £265 being donated to David Mills to support his balustrade patio project).

The “Christmas Bash” is the culmination of our senior events each year, and we were blessed with wonderful weather. Many festive prizes were won, 5 nearest the pins and 1st, 2nd and 3rd in three divisions, but I must mention the top scorer, Mr Phil Juneau (pictured) who scored an incredible 24 points on the back 9 (obviously he golfs better with a brandy in him) and 40 points overall (including 11 pars & 3 “blobs”). I’m sure he’ll be enjoying his “Gentleman Jack” over Christmas having originated from the USA.

Just to recap on the year, during the Spring to autumn period we had a full schedule of 32 reciprocal friendly matches against local clubs such as Cromer and Sheringham in the north, Thorpeness and Southwold to the south and Royal Norwich in the west to name a few. We won 24, lost 6 and drew 2, unfortunately, we didn’t fare so well in the county competitions this year.

Apart from these friendly home & away games, we also enjoy taking on our Ladies section in the Spring & Autumn in a long running competition called the “One Eyed Birdie” (which after many years the Ladies won – I’m blaming the past Seniors Captain for that and the favourable terms he granted them!).

We have a few other “seniors only” club competitions (news stories during the year referred), including competing in our own division at GGC’s championship weekend, to produce the overall top senior, which I’m embarrassed to mention I won!

New players are always welcome to join us (55 & over) and it’s a fantastic way for seniors joining Gorleston, to quickly integrate and make new friends. The fixtures for next year will be in the diary, and if you want to become involved, please subscribe via Club V1, Club Teams, to receive updates and where you can mark your availability for games in 2026

I will end by welcoming next years’ seniors Captain of Keith Newman-Allen and our new Seniors President, Martin Bullen.

Best Wishes for a Merry Christmas and Happy Golfing in 2026
