Winter League - Match Report
22nd February 2026
RBGS travelled to Swanston for the final group fixture knowing that a halved match would be enough to secure a top spot and earn home advantage in the semi-final.

Conditions on arrival were dry but very breezy, with the wind and slopey lies presenting an early challenge!

In match 1 we had Alan Ker and George Sampson, a closely contested match from start to finish, with neither side more than one hole ahead. It fittingly ended all square, earning a valuable half point.

In match 2 we welcomed back Malcolm Pennycott and our junior making his 2nd appearance Will Brian. The pair took time to adapt to the windy conditions, finding themselves 2 down early on.

In match 3 the tried and tested partnership of John Fraser and Derrick Lee once again proved competitive. Two down in the early stages, they fought back impressively to reach all square at the turn.

In the final match 4 Ethan Campbell partnered Richard Johnston making a welcome return to the side. This match was evenly poised early on before an unfortunate turn of events saw one of the home players forced to retire on the 4th hole due to a “dodgy stomach”. As a result the match ended rather one sided with Ethan and Richard getting an early finish after a 7&6 win and our first full point.

In match 2 with the contest level on the par 3 17th, young Will Brian struck a superb 7 iron to four feet and calmly holed the putt – guaranteeing a half point needed to win the group. The pair went on to win the 18th, securing a full point in style.

Match 3 also went down the final hole where John and Derrick narrowly missed out.

Final result:

Swanston 1.5 – RBGS 2.5

A tough and hard fought day in testing conditions. This result makes us group winners and gives us a home tie in the semi-final on the 8th of March against Bruntsfield at 10am. All supporters welcome.
