(Mortonhall GC v RBGS – Tuesday 28th April 2026)
Our second away fixture of the summer league campaign took us to Mortonhall, where we were greeted by another superb evening. With a prompt 4.45pm start, the goal was to ensure all matches were completed in daylight. While the course itself looked in great condition some of the greens were not in a great condition which led to a tricky evening with the putter.
Greg Nicolson went off first and led early on with other matches not in order out on the course with some big leads for both sides after only 6 holes.
Unfortunately, Ethan up against one of their stronger players and not having played the course before was defeated heavily, albeit the Mortonhall player was 5 under par when the match was ended.
There was good news however with Alan Ker up by 4 holes, Malcolm Pennycott up by 2, George Sampson up by 3, John Fraser up by 3 and James Kempster 4 up at the turn. Stuart Roberts was the only game we were down in by 2 holes at the turn.
Malcolm went on to win 5&4 followed by Alan Ker winning 6&5, giving us a 2-1 lead. Greg was heading off down 16, 1 down with news coming back that he had succumbed to a 2&1 loss. 2-2
Heading into the back 9 we were in a good position but as always matches can turn and John Fraser had lost a couple of holes to be 2 up heading into the final few holes. George Sampson was looking good but again the almost guaranteed fight back from Mortonhall had begun. George was now 2 up playing 16.
James Kempster won his game out in the country with an emphatic 6&5 win, overall score now 3-2. We needed 1.5 points to get an important away win.
Thankfully news came back that John Fraser had won 2&1. It was now all down to George to get his game finished off but the Mortonhall player drove the green at the short 16th par 4 leading to an easy birdie and now George was 1 up with 2 to Play.
Stuart Roberts was 2 down but had pegged that back to all square. At the par 3 17th George had gone slightly long but after a fantastic chip to 1 foot won the hole giving us another point and our 5th point and an away win.
Stuart’s match was graciously halved meaning the final result was 5.5 -2.5 for the Burgess. It always looks easier on paper than it was on the night but some fantastic golf and a brilliant away win.
Final Score: Mortonhall 2.5 – Royal Burgess 5.5
Next match – Murrayfield GC away – Tuesday the 5th of May
