Welcome to Team News Week 2! This week we were away against Middlesbrough Municipal Golf Club.
In the scratch section, Billingham earned an impressive 7 points to Middlesbrough’s 5. Our winning players truly delivered: Andy Hood secured a strong 4&3 victory, Graeme Nimmo triumphed 1up, and Nic Winstanley staged a fantastic comeback—down by 3 with just 4 to play, Nic fought through and clinched a 1up win on the final hole. Well done! Phil Chadwick contributed a valuable point, while Tom Lee (4&2) and Marc Symington (1 down) gave it their all, showing great sportsmanship.
Moving to the handicap section, Billingham faced a tough challenge, finishing with 4 points to Middlesbrough’s 8. Our players were up against significant odds, giving the home team between 3 and 5 shots - a definite advantage for them! Still, Dan Spence brought home a solid 4&2 win, and Will Bellerby delivered an outstanding performance with an 8&7 victory - what a result! Although Paul McGrath (2&1), Steve Smart (4&2), Darren Hurst (7&6), and Graeme Speight (3&2) didn’t secure wins this time, every one of you played with determination. Win or lose, you truly embody what it means to be a team, and we are proud of each of you.
The final result being; Billingham 11 points to Middlesbrough Municipal 13. To come away from an away match with 11 points is fantastic - well done, everyone!
A heartfelt thank you goes out to all our supporters who braved the very cold weather to be there for the team. It certainly wasn’t as warm as Lanzarote, and the only thing cold here was the Carling! Special appreciation to our Captain Albert Spence BEM, Vice-Captain Robert Kirton, and Jack Hurst. A big shoutout to Stewart Openshaw for stepping in and assisting Neil Kerr during my absence - thank you Mr President! Our caddies deserve special mention as well: Steven Lowth, who travelled back from Oxford to support Will Bellerby and continued to encourage the team after Will’s win, and Andy Hood’s dad, who made the journey from Tenerife! If I’ve missed anyone, it’s certainly not intentional, and your support is always valued.
I’ve heard mixed reviews about the course conditions, so let’s just say the bunkers left a lot to be desired, the greens were slow with plenty of pitch marks (Billingham members, take note!), and the fairways had their fair share of divots. Overall, the course was okay, but this is sometimes the reality of a pay-and-play venue.
Looking ahead, we are away again next week, heading to Castle Eden GC on Wednesday, 20th May. It’s not far, so why not come along to cheer on the team? All the drama of the soaps on TV, but with better suspense!
Thanks again for everyone’s effort, support, and team spirit.
Regards,
Neil Kerr & Tony Evans
