Welcome to Team News Week 3! This week our match was away against Castle Eden Golf Club, and what a competitive evening it was! Facing a formidable side with handicaps ranging from +2 to 3 in the scratch section, our lads gave it their all. Although we came up short, losing 12 points to 0, every player put in an impressive performance and demonstrated real determination. Phil Chadwick battled fiercely, losing only 1 down, and a big shout-out goes to our junior Sam Griffiths, who played some outstanding golf in his scratch section debut, finishing 2&1. Josh Thompson lost 6&4, Andy Hood and Marc Symington both lost 4&3, and Taylor Briggs 7&6, but these players continue to give everything each week against tough opponents with much lower handicaps.
Switching over to the handicap section, we found ourselves up against lower handicap players once again, but managed to secure 5 points to Castle Eden’s 7. Congratulations to our winners Steve Smart and Nic Winstanley, each finishing 2&1, and to Will Bellerby for earning us a hard-fought half point. Daniel Spence lost on the final hole, Graeme Nimmo was 2 down, and Paul McGrath lost 2&1, but every one of these lads poured their heart into their games. We are proud of everyone, win or lose, you always give your best. As we say, we win as a team and lose as a team, but the camaraderie you share is second to none and truly a pleasure to witness.
The final result for the evening was Billingham 5 points, Castle Eden 19 points.
A huge thank you to Graeme Speight and Darren Hurst for coming along and cheering on the team. Your support makes a difference! Speaking of supporters, we never cease to be amazed by how many of you show up for the team. The Castle Eden Captain and Manager made a point of mentioning the fantastic turnout, so well done to Captain Albert Spence BEM, President Stewart Openshaw, Jack Hurst, Terry Conlon, and our OAP Howard Gill. Our caddies; Colin Spence, Steven Lowth, and Martin Griffiths, also deserve special thanks for their dedication and effort; your contribution is much appreciated by both players and managers.
We would also like to extend our gratitude to Castle Eden Golf Club for their warm hospitality. The catering staff provided excellent food, management and bar staff looked after us brilliantly, and it was wonderful to see our players mingling and having fun with their opponents, a great bunch of lads all around! The course itself was in fantastic condition, thanks to the hard work of the green staff.
Looking ahead, we are back at home next week to face Cleveland Golf Club on 27th May. We would love to see as many supporters as possible, and maybe a few new faces, coming along to cheer the team. Trust us, it’s far more exciting than sitting at home watching the soaps!
Thanks again for everyone’s effort, support, and outstanding team spirit.
Regards,
Neil Kerr & Tony Evans
