We managed to get most of our preferred team lineup out in order. However, by the 5th hole it was clear we were in for a long night. Almost every single match was locked all square, with one exception Greg Nicolson who managed to carve out an early 2 up lead.
The first match was at the 11th, and Malcolm Pennycott was up against it with the Mortonhall player 4 under for 11 holes, leaving Malcolm 2 down. George Sampson was also in a similar position 2 down at the turn. There were sparks of light in the next few matches with Alan Ker 3 up and Greg 4 up at the turn.
As expected, the spoils were shared across the opening four matches, finishing deadlocked at 2-2.
With the match on a knife edge, we needed 2.5 points from the final four matches to secure the overall victory. It was incredibly tight: Ethan was 1 up after 12, James was 1 down at the turn, John Fraser was all square and Stuart Roberts displayed fantastic grit to fight back from 3 down at the turn to just 1 down after 12.
Then came the grandstand finish.
Ethan put the first crucial points on the board for the tail end, playing the back nine in under-par fashion to secure a fantastic 3&2 win, putting Burgess ahead 3–2.
Meanwhile, James was playing some superb golf. He rolled in a brilliant birdie 4 at the 16th to go 1 up, holed a nerve-shredding 3-foot putt at the 17th to maintain his slim lead, and then striped his tee shot to 20 feet on the 18th. Two cool putts later, he secured our 4th point.
It all came down to John Fraser. John had been playing beautifully all evening, though he was agonisingly denied by missed birdie putts on 16 and 17, leaving him all square on the 18th tee. We needed just a half-point from him to secure the team win.
Instead, John did it in style. He struck a magnificent tee shot to 7 feet on the last, putting the overall victory well within grasp. He confidently holed the putt for a spectacular eagle 2, sealing his match and crowning a 5–3 victory for the Burgess.
A real gritty and determined performance from the team against a very tough opponent. A fantastic way to head into the Club Championships.
