GGC Ladies v Blairgowrie GC Ladies (Away)
Monday 29th June 2026
Eight Ladies represented Glasgow Golf Club in a team match for the very first time. Another chapter in the history of GGC. What more scenic venue to mark the occasion than the beautiful tree lined, parkland Rosemount Course at Blairgowrie GC The TEAM for the social match v Blairgowrie GC: Margaret Balsitis, Monica Stewart, Jane Tait, Elspeth McLaren, Anne Mactaggart, Hilary McKell, Fiona H Neilson and Lesley Wilkie BLAIRGOWRIE MATCH REPORT Car-sharing planned, timing confirmed and, importantly, coordinating golf outfit colours agreed we set off to Blairgowrie Golf Club on a sunny Monday morning. We had a warm welcome to BGC by Louise Luke (BGC Ladies vice captain; team captain for the day) and the other 7 team members. We had a lovely breakfast in the dining room with a beautiful view of the 18th green of the Rosemount course. Introductions made and pairs and playing groups were announced. As well as helpful information regarding the actual golf, the GGC ladies were delighted to hear that the course has 2 “ecoloos”. We teed off on the Rosemount course after a few team photos – the Blairgowrie ladies resplendent in their smart navy blue golf tops with club logo. THE MATCHES Monica and Mags got off to a good start, winning the first hole. BGC won the 2nd. The front nine remained close and the game was all square at the turn, helped by Monica’s excellent birdie putt at the 9th, par 4. It remained close for the next few holes but with Blairgowrie taking 13, 14, and 15 they were then the victors, 3 and 2. With the competition over we had more time to admire the lovely scenery of the final 2 holes including the pretty Cluny Bridge on the par 3 17th. Jane and Elspeth’s opponents included a scratch golfer, which made for an interesting and educational game on how different handicappers played this beautiful course. Lots of tips were generously given after they won the first 2 holes but then Glasgow pulled back on the next 5. Game on, a few halves and up and down but the decider was the par 3 15th. Jane’s tee shot landing at the back of the green and Elspeth’s layup and chip leaving a level putt against the opposition both landing in a treacherous bunker. Anne and Hilary had a good start on the unfamiliar course, winning the first 2 holes. They then lost the 3rd. As nerves settled, GGC were able to capitalise on the strokes being given and were 4 up at the turn in spite of losing the 7th. The winning streak continued; on the 11th par 5, Hilary was on the green in net 1; impossible for the opponents. GGC finished 6 and 5 when they won the 13th hole. Fiona and Lesley – What a wonderful day Lesley & I had at Blairgowrie. It was our first opportunity to represent GGC in a ladies team match and we couldn’t have asked for a better experience. We got off to a wonderful start, Lesley sunk a 30 foot putt quite early on for a birdie and it was ‘the settler’ and inspiration we needed. Always ahead, we never looked back, holding on for a 3&2 victory. Playing against Fiona and Jo we were made very welcome, enjoyed plenty of laughs throughout our round and had the pleasure of playing a top golf course in fantastic condition. We are already looking forward to the return match next year and welcoming Blairgowrie Ladies to Killermont. Golf was followed by a lovely lunch. Louise gave a brief report on the golf and announced the overall results, with Glasgow winning 3-1. The Blairgowrie ladies were gracious in defeat. Over lunch, we had plenty of vibrant conversation including some “compare and contrast” regarding ladies’ golf at the 2 clubs. BGC ladies welcomed our invitation to host them in 2027 and we hope we can give them as lovely a day out when the reciprocal match comes about. Many thanks from M&H to all who participated in the day, by all accounts a super day had by all. Thanks in particular to Mags Balsitis for stepping up to the plate when sadly Gillian Brodie had to pull out. Thank you Mags for your organisational and administrative skills and also to Elspeth McLaren, who represented the group on the day, in a vote of thanks to Blairgowrie GC. The Club have already contacted and had a date accepted by Blairgowrie GC for a return match at Killermont next year. M&H hope to arrange a few more social matches for 2027. At the start of next year an invitation will be extended to the Lady Ordinary members for their availability. Click here to see more from the day Ladies Blairgowrie Match 29th June 2026 Photos.pdf
