Captain’s Day has concluded for another year and once again our members surpassed themselves to make it an enjoyable and successful day raising over £2900 for our charities plus a £1k bump from HSBC. And what a day - we dodged the high heat from a week ago, although by mid afternoon the skies had cleared and the sun was beating down on the final groups as they finished their rounds. ? In terms of competitions, our winner for the Men’s stableford was Ed Percival with 42 pts and our Ladies winner was Birgit Cunningham with 37 pts. Congrats to both. Due to a glitch with HowDidiDo, we thought our runner up for the men was Paul Ansley (38 pts), but turned out that on count back Peter Hill-Cottingham (38 pts) was actually our runner up. Apologies to Peter for not recognising his achievement on the day. For the Ladies, Katy Downs scored 35 pts in 2nd place. Longest drive for the men was Rob James (almost on the green on the 10th) and for the ladies Katy Downs came out as winner. We won’t mention the nearest the pin for the ladies, but for the men Martin Tuthill bagged the prize on the 17th green. The hidden hole competitions were won by Luke Strickland and Birgit Cunningham (holes 2, 4, 8, 12, 15, 18). Final prize of the day was Peter France who won the champagne putting with 5 out of 6 hits! Impressive. ? Lots of raffle prizes were handed out, whilst the New Zealand 4-ball voucher was won by Winnie Hill-Cottingham, and the silent auctions resulted in Mark Harris winning Gerrards Cross (£189) and Marcus Phillips won the Ross-on-Wye voucher (£100) So many to thank; for the 60 golfers who signed up to play, for the many of you who donated prizes which contributed to over £500 of raffle ticket sales, for everyone who purchased a raffle ticket. For the cooking, my daughter Meg and her partner Kyle did a fabulous job with the BBQ, churning out burgers and hot dogs to order. Heather’s colleague Carol was busy throughout the morning preparing salads and cutting bread rolls. Heather, Rick, Katy, Winnie, Cathy and Cally (Martin’s wife) acquired food and prepared various salads, cakes & biscuits. Brian Daly kindly loaned us the use of Eton’s fridges to cool the drinks which Peter France collected on match day. Clive Lewis & his high vis jacket helped organise the car park first thing. Janet organisied the Putting competition (taking £85). Martin’s trusty marquee came out again to provide some much needed shade. The scorecards were carefully prepared by Winnie (who remained very calm despite all the late changes), and Sue O’Brien our starter kept the golfers in order to a well organised schedule.
