GGC Ladies v Dunbrachan, Gleneagles
Monday 13th July
On Monday 13 July 6 ladies set off to represent GGC at a composite fixture at the King’s Course, Gleneagles. At the kind invitation of Dunbracken Golf Club, 6 players from each of Glasgow, Blairgowrie and St Rule (St Andrew’s) joined 6 home players to create 6 teams of 4 (one player from each club). Dunbracken, founded in 1957, is the only ladies club to play from Gleneagles or at Gleneagles. We received a very warm welcome from Anne Ferrier, Dunbracken Captain. Introductions were made and the teams and playing format confirmed (team betterball Stableford with two of four scores counting at each hole). We enjoyed a lovely breakfast at the Dormy before heading to the course, feeling very fortunate to have dry and sunny conditions. The King’s course was certainly challenging but spectacular and a real pleasure to play. The holes were varied and tested our skills in many ways.. Challenging yes, but an unforgettable experience, helped by having a home club member in our teams with invaluable local knowledge. As well as the impressive scenery of the area, it was interesting to see grandstands, pavilions and tv camera towers under construction for the Senior Open being held there next week. The round included the traditional stop at the half-way house for refreshments which were very welcome at that point. We returned to the Dormy after golf for a lovely early dinner and lively chat about our golf. Anne summarised the day and announced the winning team, which was her own team and included Fiona Neilson of GGC; the team had an impressive score of 88 Stableford points. The visiting teams each gave a vote of thanks, with Fiona giving heartfelt and well-received thanks to the host club and the other guest clubs on behalf of the Glasgow ladies. Overall, this day was a great success. The playing format was new to us but contributed to great team spirit and new friendships being forged.
