Lots of golf to report on: Summer Meeting – Some great scoring form many players in one of our main events of the year. Congratulations to Malcolm Pennycott on winning the gold medal with a gross score of 67 and good luck to Malcolm this week after qualifying for the matchplay stages of the Lothians Amateur Championship at Duddingston. The Diamond Jubilee Cup was won by Jim Tait, scoring a memorable gross 79 less 15 handicap, for a net 64 !! Archie Finnie was also selected to play in the Lothians 6 man team at Easter Moffat at the weekend in the Scottish Area Team Championships. Losing out in his foursomes, he comfortably won his singles and the Lothians move into the finals. The Over 80’s Cup was won by Andrew Robertson. 9 holes and lunch…… an event now contested by approx. 20 players and growing!! The quarterfinal of the summer league will be played at the Burgess on the evening of the 4th August. I hope as many members as possible might turn out to support the team, now we are in the knockout stages. The Society matches have been coming fast and furious. The weekend with Royal Blackheath was preceded by the newly formed ‘Orlando Hart Challenge. A full day of golf and hospitality for our international members. Immediately afterwards the annual fixture against Blackheath. This was a great fun weekend, made better by the successful winning of both the Flag on day 1 and the cup on day 2. And last week we hosted the Senior golfers Society . Again a victory, without even losing a match. So a nice little winning streak for a change!!! Well done to all involved. Continuing on form the 1956 Penfold-Swallow, the next big Professional event held at the Burgess was the 1959 Swallow-Penfold Tournament. This was won by Peter Butler with a score of 280 (75-72-67-66) and the £1,000 top prize! Peter Butler was a 4x Ryder Cup player, played in the US Masters 7 times and the Open 23 times (“ top tens). Again some of the best golfers in the world were playing at Barnton. These included 4x Open Champion Booby Locke, 4x Open Champion Peter Thomson, 3x Open Champion Henry cotton along with Harry Weetman (finishing 2nd), John Panton, Dai Rees, Bernard hunt, & Harold Henning .
