Veterans Trophy
21st July
Tuesday saw round 4 (from 6) of The Vets taking place in lovely benign conditions and on such a calm day, the course was there for the taking. And indeed, full advantage was taken with no less than 12 players matching or bettering their handicaps. Gordon More, who was already doing well in the competition after 3 rounds shot a scintillating 41 points to grab the lead at the top of the pile and with a combined best 3 round total of 117 points, Gordon can just about afford to give the last 2 rounds a miss and simply invite everyone else to try and catch him. Gordon’s 3 best rounds are 40-36-41, some shooting. Hard on Gordon’s heels on the day was Donald Caskie, no stranger to doing well in The Vets, Donald shot a fantastic 40 points to trail Gordon by a single point on the day. In 3rd place (better inward half) for round 4 was Jim Stewart, shooting a tidy scratch 75 for 39 points. And spare a thought for Grant Hawthorne, shooting a scratch 72 also for 39 points and only managing 4th on the day. Other notable scores for players bettering their handicaps were; Les Mottram, 38 points, Brian Connelly, 38 points, David Macallum, 38 points, Vets stalwart Duncan MacAulay, 37 points, David Russell, 37 points and Stewart Linford 37 points. On the day, there was only 2 birdie 2’s for golf balls, with Stewart Lindford getting his 2 at the 5th and Jim Stewart getting a birdie 2 on 15. In the overall leaderboard, it’s looking like this. Gordon More, 117 points Grant Hawthorne, 110 points Robert Smith, 107 points Kevin Cogan, 106 points. So, Gordon has a tasty lead, but it’s catchable with 2 rounds still to play!
