A total of 40 young golfers turned up to play in the Ralph Moffitt Open with 24 being from various clubs around Norfolk and Suffolk and a late entry from a young lad on holiday from Hertfordshire from Panshanger Golf Club. 34 played in the 18 hole competition and 6 of Gorleston’s youngsters played in the 9 hole event. The weather was sunny and hot for a change and early on not much of a breeze but that soon changed. With Scratch and Stableford prizes on offer with the prize fund boosted by Chris (behind the bar) Beare’s regular donation of £100 the prizes were of a good amount and well worth winning which reflected in some high scores being returned. Club Captain Andrew Clifford literally started proceedings by acting as Starter and ended proceedings by presenting the winners with their prizes. Winners of the Scratch prizes were in first place Henry Ridgeon (gross 71) from Stowmarket GC, in second place was our own Luca Devine-Rushbroke (73), third place went to Anthony Coppola (76, Royal Norwich) and fourth place to Ethan McCleary (77, Bury St. Edmunds). The Handicap Stableford was a very close run affair with 4 players in the clubhouse with 39 points and one group yet to come in calculators were at the ready, especially as nobody could win 2 prizes but it was the last group that returned the days highest Stableford score and the eventual winner. Winning the Stableford category with a great round of 40 points was in form Harry Page leaving second place Jacob Schouten (39pts, Cainhoe Wood GC), third place Isaac Barrow (39pts, Mattishall) and fourth place Max Farman (37pts GGC). In the 9 hole stableford competition young Harry Gilbert-Barnham was victorious with an astonishing 25 points and somehow I don’t think his handicap of 21 will stay that high for long and this left George Teece with another excellent 22 points in second place. Winner of the nearest to the pin in 2 shots on the 10th hole was scratch winner Henry Ridgeon and winner of the 20 yard sprint was Duncan Abbott with a time of 3.8 seconds to open his shop for the winners to spend their vouchers.
