English Junior Club Championships final
Woodhall Spa
Following their recent victory in winning the Hampshire Green Jackets at Hockley Golf Club, Aiden Wilson, Oliver Bourke and Marley Austin Vautier represented Royal Jersey Golf Club at the English Junior Club Championships held at Woodhall Spa, the home of England Golf, on Tuesday 11th and Wednesday 12th August. There were 31 teams from across the Country taking part with each team representing their County having won a qualifying competition. The format was stableford played off handicap with the best two scores from each team counting. The boys enjoyed a practice round on the Bracken Course on Monday in hot conditions with the course playing very fast after the dry conditions. The greens were in excellent condition but were very challenging. The predictions from the organisers were that it would be very difficult to play to handicap and the decision had been made to play from the yellow tees. Marley scored an excellent 35 points on day one with Oliver and Aiden each scoring 26 points giving Royal Jersey 61 points. The leading team score after the first day was 77 points which left us someway behind the leaders and in 20th place out of the 31 teams. The target on day two was to improve our team score, to move up the leaderboard and to enjoy the opportunity and competition. Conditions were even hotter on day 2 but we were fortunate to have an early tee time missing the heat of the afternoon. Aiden playing off +1 had a 2 under par round for 37 points. This was the lowest gross score of all 93 players on either day. Oliver scored 31 points and Marley 24 points. The 68 points gave the team a combined score of 145 which placed them tied 14th from the 31 teams. All three targets for day 2 were achieved! Whilst being a bit disappointed with some of their play, all three boys played some excellent golf and were a credit to Royal Jersey and Hampshire Golf who had both generously provided financial support for the trip.
