On Sunday, the Junior Team competed for The Wee Boundary Bell which is played between the winners of the JJ McCarry League (North of Glasgow) and The Fleming Watson League (South of Glasgow). Unlike the Gents, this consists of 5 scratch matchplay singles games and in the event of a tie, a playoff determines the result. This year, Glasgow Golf Club would be competing against Bonnyton Golf Club, the same opponent as the Gents team. The games kicked off and things were tight. Through 10 holes: - Charlie MacFarlane was A/S - Seumas MacCuish was 3Up - Archie MacMillan was 1Up - Harris McGregor was A/S - Lewis Reynolds was 8Up The scores didn’t reflect it, but Charlie, Archie and Harris were all trading 1Up with their opponents at different stages. Through 15 holes: - Charlie was 2Dn - Seumas was Dormie 3Up - Archie was 2Up - Harris was 1Dn - Lewis had won 9&7 Charlie MacFarlane ended up dormie 2Dn with a half at 16, followed by winning 17 with a tremendous 20ft putt. Coming down the last he knew he had one hole left to try and help the team by getting potentially a crucial half which he though at this stage would at least guarantee a playoff. He did just that, winning 18 with a straightforward par. Seumas MacCuish capitalised on his position and knew that a half down 16 would be enough to seal the win in his game. He did just that and won his game 3&2. Archie MacMillan also proceeded to close out his game with a par down 16 to win his match. With the realisation that Glasgow had retained the Bell, the pressure was released for Harris McGregor. His opponent conceded 16 to make it A/S after just too many shots. On 17, Harris didn’t hit his best shot, leaving it short of the green in fact but all was forgotten when he was robbed of a chip in birdie as the ball hit the pin and stayed on the lip. Harris, now struggling with the after-effects of a game of rugby on Saturday and a night at Oran Mor (the less said about that the better) made a solid 5 which was too good for his opponent who sadly after 17 holes of steady golf, sent one wayward and out of bounds. Glasgow 4 ½ - ½ Bonnyton Glasgow retain the Wee Boundary Bell Congratulations to the Boys who have now made it 4 wins in 5 years. Commiserations to Bonnyton, who we hope to meet again, years down the line. Many thanks to go to Lenzie Golf Club for hosting the event, the League secretaries for organising the event, the greenstaff for making sure the course was in good condition which it was, the Bar and Kitchen staff for keeping us watered and fed and finally to John Greaves. John has spent a lot of time over the years developing our juniors, whether its been at summer camps, one to one lessons or taking the boys on trips to North Berwick and this year Murcar. The success of the juniors is a direct byproduct of his investment and for that I am extremely thankful.
