Summary
August has continued the pattern of strong summer growth and repeated rainfall. The main operational priorities remain maintaining consistent playing surfaces, managing moisture and disease pressure, addressing machinery reliability, and assessing future mowing options.
• Approximately 101 mm of rain had been recorded by 20 August, while growth potential remained predominantly between 0.80 and 1.00.
• Greens have generally maintained good presentation and playing quality despite high growth and moisture pressure.
• The Toro ProCore requires a crankshaft bearing repair by Reesink at a quoted cost of just under £2,696.08.
• One new greens mower cutting unit has now been away three times with an ongoing bearing fault; both new mowing machines have also required a regrind.
• Robotic mowing is being investigated, but charging infrastructure and whole-life cost must be assessed before any recommendation is made.
Weather & Growing Conditions
July and August have continued to provide challenging growing conditions, with a combination of high growth potential and repeated periods of heavy rainfall.
July saw growth potential remain exceptionally high for much of the month, frequently above 0.90 and reaching close to maximum growth potential on several occasions. This resulted in very strong turf growth across the course, particularly following rainfall events.
Rainfall during July was unevenly distributed but included several significant events. Approximately 20 mm fell on 5 July, followed later in the month by approximately 31 mm on 28 July. These heavier rainfall events, combined with warm temperatures, resulted in rapid growth and made maintaining presentation, clipping control and consistent playing surfaces more difficult.
The same pattern has continued into August. Growth potential has remained predominantly between 0.80 and 1.00, meaning the grass plant has continued to operate close to its maximum growth rate.
Rainfall has also been significant. By 20 August, approximately 101 mm of rainfall had already been recorded for the month. Notable individual events included approximately 27 mm on 4 August, 17 mm on 9 August and 17 mm on 17 August, along with several smaller rainfall events.
The combination of high temperatures, high growth potential and regular rainfall has created ideal conditions for rapid turf growth. This increases mowing requirements considerably and also increases disease pressure, particularly on the greens where moisture retention within the existing organic matter layer remains an ongoing issue.
Despite these conditions, the greens have generally maintained good presentation and playing quality. Growth regulation continues to form an important part of the maintenance programme, helping to control excessive growth and maintain more consistent green speed and surface quality throughout the day.
The rainfall experienced through July and August again reinforces the importance of the club's ongoing programme of improving drainage, reducing organic matter and increasing sand inputs. The long-term objective remains to produce firmer, better-draining surfaces which recover more quickly following periods of heavy rainfall.
Machinery – Repairs & Maintenance
A number of machinery repairs have been required during this period. These have included routine servicing and wear-related repairs, as well as reliability issues with some of the newer equipment.
John Deere ProGator
The ProGator has required several maintenance items and repairs:
• Replacement of the glow plugs.
• Replacement of a wheel bearing.
• A full service.
The ProGator remains an important machine within our maintenance operation, particularly for spraying, so keeping it reliable is essential.
Toro ProCore 648
During the most recent hollow-coring operation on the greens, I noticed that the depth control on the ProCore was not operating correctly. This resulted in the machine coring deeper than intended in areas and consequently meant that considerably more sand was required to fill the holes than originally anticipated.
Following investigation, the fault has been identified as wear within the crankshaft bearing assembly. The crankshaft bearings require replacement using the manufacturer's bearing repair kit.
Due to the nature of the repair, the work will need to be carried out by Reesink, with the quoted cost being just under £2,686.08
Although this is a significant repair cost, the work is required before further greens renovation. Accurate tine depth is important both agronomically and financially. Excessive depth increases surface disruption, recovery time and the amount of sand required to properly backfill the holes.
New Greens & Tees Mowers
Unfortunately, we have also experienced some reliability issues with the new mowing equipment.
One of the greens mower cutting units has now been away for repair on three separate occasions due to an ongoing bearing fault. This is particularly disappointing given the age of the equipment and the issue continues to be monitored.
Both of the new machines have also required their cutting units to be reground to ensure the quality of cut is at the standard required for greens and tees.
Quality of cut is extremely important at the low heights these machines operate at. Poor reel-to-bedknife contact or an inconsistent cutting edge can affect turf health as well as the appearance and consistency of the playing surfaces.
Rough Mower
An incident occurred while cutting the steep bank around the 3rd hole, where the rough mower lost traction and slid down the slope. This resulted in the PTO shaft being bent.
Following the incident, this area has been reviewed and the rough mower will no longer be used to cut this bank. An alternative method of maintaining the area will be used going forward to reduce the risk of further machinery damage and, more importantly, improve operator safety.
The incident highlights the limitations of using larger machinery on some of the steeper areas of the course, and these areas will continue to be assessed to ensure the safest and most appropriate maintenance method is being used.
Greens Performance
The greens have continued to perform well despite the combination of high growth potential and repeated rainfall. The latest Deacon overview recorded an average green speed of 10'10", smoothness of 2.73 and trueness of 0.62. Average soil moisture was 32.37%, with soil temperature at 17.58°C and salinity at 0.37 dS/m.
The moisture figure remains the key agronomic concern. It supports what we are seeing in the profile: the upper organic matter layer is retaining water for too long following rainfall. The ongoing programme of drainage, organic matter reduction and increased sand inputs is aimed at improving infiltration, firmness and recovery after wet weather.
The objective is not simply to chase green speed. The priority is to produce surfaces that are firm, smooth and consistent throughout the day while maintaining plant health and reducing reliance on very low mowing heights.
Robotic Mowers – Feasibility Review
I have started investigating the potential use of robotic mowers at Caldwell, particularly for fairway and larger-area mowing, as part of the club's future machinery strategy.
Reesink have provided an initial proposal for four Toro Turf Pro 500 units, four charging stations and a 4G RTK base station at a net price of £122,467.18 excluding VAT.
Each Turf Pro 500 has a stated maximum working area of 55,000 m², a 103.3 cm mowing width, an average working time of 100 minutes and an average full charge time of 90 minutes. The system uses GNSS RTK positioning and can be scheduled and monitored remotely.
Infrastructure Requirement
The principal issue at Caldwell is that the electrical infrastructure for distributed charging stations is not currently in place. A suitable electrical supply would need to be taken through the golf course, with branches to the required charging locations. The cost of trenching, armoured cable, distribution, protection, installation and reinstatement therefore needs to be established before the true project cost can be assessed.
Next Steps -
I still have another couple of dealerships to speak to so that alternative systems can be compared on coverage, cut quality, charging requirements, reliability, support and total cost.
Fairways GM are arranging a demonstration next month on the practice area and 18th fairway. This will allow us to assess the technology under actual course conditions, including navigation, finish, slope performance and practical charging requirements.
Any future business case should compare whole-life cost rather than purchase price alone. This should include electrical infrastructure, servicing and blade costs, electricity, expected machine life, the conventional machinery that could be displaced, fuel savings and the staff hours that could be released for presentation, drainage, bunker work and other skilled course-maintenance tasks.
No recommendation is being made at this stage. The aim is to gather enough operational and financial evidence to determine whether robotic mowing would provide a genuine long-term benefit to Caldwell.
