Even while he was winning tournaments, James Braid turned his talents to golf course design. He originated classics such as Gleneagles and Royal Musselburgh, as well as scores of ‘village’ gems such as Brora, Neath, and North Hants. Many others he extended from 9 to 18 holes, such as St Enodoc and Hankley Common, or revised existing layouts, such as Fortrose & Rosemarkie and Carnoustie. His designs have stood the test of time well. Hawkstone's own history records that the original course opened in 1920, and that James Braid visited in 1930 and recommended changes. His most significant contribution was the creation of the present 11th (Grotto Vale) and 12th (The Moat) holes, together with improvements to bunkering. This makes Hawkstone Park a member of the Association of James Braid Courses (AOJBC). The association links hundreds of clubs where Braid either designed the course or substantially altered/reconstructed it.
