NI Legends – Galgorm Castle Golf Club Final Round Andy completed the NI Legends with a final-round 73, finishing the tournament on one under par and in a tie for 30th place. His three rounds were 74, 68 and 73 for a total of 215. I texted Andy afterwards and asked how he had played. I think I shall keep his first reply to myself! He was still full of cold and not feeling 100%, although he then admitted: “I didn’t play too bad, to be fair.” I suggested that he should have a whisky and relax now that the tournament was over. Andy responded by sending me a picture of a proper Irish drink—a well-earned pint of Guinness! The winning performance from Steven Alker was exceptional. He recorded three consecutive rounds of 67 to finish on 15 under par. When I mentioned to Andy just how good that winning score was, his reply was short and very much to the point: “Very.” I was left with the impression that Andy felt the week had been a bit of a waste of time. Perhaps that was the cold talking, because no tournament is truly a waste of time when you are out there doing something you love for a living. More than anything, I think it was the professional sportsman coming out in him. Andy always wants to compete at the highest level, and when he feels that he has fallen short of the standard he expects from himself, he can become frustrated and a little downhearted. He has always been that way, and I suppose that is one of the reasons he became a professional sportsman. He always wants to perform at his best, and it frustrates him when he cannot—particularly when illness gets in the way. Usually, it does not take Andy long to bounce back. I am sure his spirits will lift, the cold will clear and he will soon be ready to compete again at the next event. Well done to Steven Alker on a superb victory, and well done to Andy for battling through all three rounds while feeling far from his best. Now enjoy that Guinness, Andy—you have earned it!
