The invitational Texas Scramble was another great success in the showcasing of the Burgess as a great fun, social club in addition to our golf course. There were an exceptional number of compliments about the whole Clubhouse experience. Kitchen and Bar staff in particular should be mentioned; not just for their service but even coping with a dining room door coming off its hinges during the day! Some thanks to Senior members representing the club at both the inaugural Lothians 3Man Team event and the Edinburgh Senior Inter-Club. Callum Reid, Ian Panton and Niall Howard for the 3 man senior Lothians Team Tournament at Deer Park and to John Fraser, David Cusiter, Doug Ross and Stephen Docherty for the InterClub. No success this time around but hope you all enjoyed representing the Society. Many Congratulations to our Greens Convenor (Green Ranger) Malcolm Pennycott who won the Ian Taylor Memorial Cup and to George Sampson who won the Autumn Meeting Scratch Gold Medal. Two of our best golfers performing well. ……and of course to Russell Hood won the Grand Fleet Cup for the Autumn Meeting best net score. For your information 198 Ladies played in our Ladies Greensomes Open on Sunday 13th September. Congratulations to Crieff on winning the QE Coronation Schools Trophy. They beat Merchiston in the final to chalk up their first victory; and beat both last years finalists on the way. Many congratulations also to Jordan Sundborg. Long way to go yet, however he has made it through Stage1 qualifying for the DP World Tour at Dunham Forest. A big thankyou to outgoing environment committee members Mark Robertson, Michael Roe and Don Gilfillan. The EC is an important part of the sub structure within the club. It serves as an advisory sub-group to the Greens committee and we owe many thanks to these members who have volunteered a considerable amount of time along with their expertise to serving the club in this capacity. We are looking now for any members who might wish to consider being involved, to let the office know. A sound knowledge of trees and/or shrubs along with other environmental issues would be of great assistance. The Special General Meeting held earlier this week allowed members the opportunity to vote on 5 motions. Many thanks to the some 220 members who engaged in the process and voted. Motions 1,3,4,&5 passed with approximately 90% in favour. The Resolution to allow the incumbent council to raise subscriptions by up to 5% without need for EGM, narrowly failed to reach the Super majority required. It is a members club and is important that as many of you as possible do engage in deciding on important constitutional changes. Following on from previous blogs………The next big Tournament held at the Burgess was the 1973 Martini International was won by Maurice Bembridge, the same year my father George Yuille started as club Professional at the Burgess. A new course record of 63 was set by Paul Leonard in the first round, beating the previous mark held by Bernard Hunt in the 1966 Pringle event. Bembridge who was a British Masters and MatchPlay Champion scored 279 and pipped Dai Rees to win the first prize of £2,000. Bembridge won 20 Professional tournaments, 6 on the European Tour; following its inception in 1972. He played in 4 Ryder Cups, finished 9th at the US masters in 1974, and finished 5th in the Open in 1968 four shots behind Gary Player. John Yuille - Captain 21st September 2026
