Notice to members — tractor tyre marks and free relief Relief is available where the Committee has declared the affected ground to be ground under repair (GUR), either by marking it or through a published notice or Local Rule. Where GUR interferes with your ball, intended stance or intended swing, free relief is normally available under Rule 16.1. For a ball in the general area, including fairways and rough: Find the nearest point of complete relief, no nearer the hole. Drop the original ball or another ball from knee height within one club-length of that point. The ball must land and come to rest in the relief area, in the general area, no nearer the hole, with complete relief from the GUR. The nearest point of complete relief does not guarantee a favourable lie. Rule 16.1 does not provide free relief when the ball is in a penalty area.
