As I sit and reflect on this season’s HPGC ‘friendly’ men’s matches, I do so with some very fond memories.
That is, of course, with the exception of the 5–1 battering away at Alsager! A big thank you to Ken and Phil for stepping up and saving our blushes on that occasion!
A busy fixture list, taking in Church Stretton, Market Drayton, Carden Park, Alsager and Bridgnorth, to name but a few, did little to deter a full and enthusiastic contingent of HPGC stalwarts. Week after week, players proudly turned out in our unmistakable blue and white colours to represent our fantastic golf club.
As always, we proved to be strong opposition on home soil. Away from home, however, we perhaps found things a little more challenging, particularly at the fortresses of Market Drayton and Church Stretton. That said, I fondly recall Bob Parker securing a very well-earned point at Church Stretton!
My overriding reflection is that we really do have a fantastic bunch of members at HPGC, and I have thoroughly enjoyed every fixture we have played. The camaraderie, good humour and competitive spirit have made each match an absolute pleasure.
I would also encourage more members to get involved next season. The fixtures come thick and fast during the summer months, and this is a brilliant opportunity to enjoy some fun, friendly and competitive matchplay while representing our club. If you think your golf isn’t quite ready for the occasion, let me reassure you that there is a place for everyone! I need only recount the story of my infamous 40-yard power slice off the first tee at Church Stretton, performed in front of a full house! If I can survive that, so can you!
It is also worth highlighting that these friendly fixtures provide a great stepping stone into our Handicap League. A particular well done to Howard Birch for leading the team through what was an impressive season.
Finally, a huge thank you to everyone who has given up their Saturdays, Sundays (and occasionally both!) to represent HPGC throughout the season. Your commitment and enthusiasm are very much appreciated.
Here’s to next season, more great company, a few more points on the board and plenty more friendly competition.
See you all next season, representing the mighty HPGC!
