COURSE MANAGER’S REPORT
This week the team have been busy again as we begin some winter work whilst at the same time the grass continues to grow and course set up is still a priority.
The greens, tees and aprons have all been sprayed as we continue with our spraying programme. We have applied a recovery mix to help the plant recover from the disease we had and also included some potassium and liquid iron. Spraying potassium on golf greens heading into winter is a common practice to harden turf and protect it from freeze and stress damage by strengthening cell walls. It is crucial to apply it at the right time—during a warm spell before any frost. We will follow this up in the next couple of weeks with an Autumn granular fertilizer. This week we have had a free demonstration of a Husqvarna Robot Mower which you would have seen on a few of the local holes. I will post my feedback on this next week as we have it for a few more days.
I also had the hedges down the roads cut this week and a few areas on the course. This hasn’t been done for a while and has made a big difference. It has also helped with the safety of both the staff on machines and members crossing the road improving visibility.
The pathways around the course following last weekend's rain have started to become sticky in places and we have been adding a few more ropes to protect these areas. One of the worst areas for this is to the left of the 12th green. Because of this I have extended the path from the medal tee to run down to the yellow tee and join up with the path leading to the 13th hole. We will add some hard core to this over the winter months and then bark chips in the spring. This will help with buggy and trolley access and protect the area in front of the green. We also plan to extend the path from the 16th tee to the 17th bridge in front of the yellow tee. Paths on 2nd and 3rd have also been extended slightly this week.
More work was done by the sapling group this week on the 1st and 7th holes. Good progress is being made. They are always looking for volunteers so anyone interested please contact Andy Allen.
We have prepared a few areas for turfing which will be completed next week. These include the 2nd ladies tee and a few bare areas we have highlighted around the course.
The bunkers didn't get raked as often but were fully raked at the end of the week. The tees and aprons haven't been cut, this is so we could concentrate on other work around the course. Holes were still changed each day and dew removed from greens each morning. Fairways were also rested this week.
Next week we will look to aerate the greens again with the shallow slitter and get all surfaces cut.
I would like to wish our new captains Mick and Angela all the best for their year ahead and thank Phil and Julie, the outgoing captains, for all their support over the last 12 months.
Enjoy your weekend.
Dave.
